Plein Air Workshop – May 29, 2026

In this workshop, I provided easels and canvases for the participants, but everyone was required to bring their own acrylic paints. I discovered that people’s preferences for colour sets vary significantly. Some choices are based on personal experiences, while others are influenced by past instructors. We had a lively discussion about which colours to purchase. I shared with the group that, according to Langara College tradition, we only buy a limited number of colours. This selection is more than sufficient for everyone’s daily painting needs and helps to reduce anxiety, making the painting process more enjoyable.

It was a cold and cloudy day, which honestly wasn’t the most inviting weather for being outside. Spring seemed to have other plans, but people still chose to head out, set up easels, and paint despite the chill — and that kind of decision is really what plein air is all about. There’s something that happens when you’re out there in the cool air, surrounded by all that West Coast green and the flowers still doing their thing, that you simply can’t get any other way.

As the weather wasn’t ideal, some participants made the smart choice of painting indoors. However, there’s no doubt that we can produce outstanding paintings inside, and this is one of the greatest advantages of Branscombe House. The numerous large windows allow abundant natural light, enhancing our work and providing a stimulating environment for creativity.

By the end of the session, the cold was forgotten, and the painting that came out that day was just wonderful.

I really look forward to seeing you at my next plein air event.
