The initial step in this research is to develop tools, starting with a Chinese-style baren called 耙子 (ba zi). Unlike the Japanese round baren, the Chinese ba zi is rectangular, larger, and heavier, though its surface is softer. The body of the ba zi is crafted from solid wood. The materials needed include palm tree bark, a wooden handle, cotton rope, cushioning items like cardboard and silicone sheets, packing paper, and cutting tools. To assemble, the solid side of bark is trimmed into a serrated shape, and then two layers of bark, along with a piece of cardboard and a silicone sheet, are stacked together. These layers are wrapped in paper and secured with cotton ropes on both ends. The final step involves carefully peeling away the protective paper from the front, leaving the ends intact. With this, the bazi is ready for the next phase.
