“Coastal Reverie” was my solo exhibition at the Visual Space Gallery in Vancouver, BC, in September 2024. It is a collection of paintings that reflects my personal journey along the West Coast of Canada, capturing the region’s diverse and breathtaking nature. The collection portrays the majestic mountains, vast oceans, ever-changing winds, and dynamic cloud formations that define coastal scenes. Through a blend of figurative and abstract techniques, I selectively emphasize visual elements that hold deep meaning for me. Drawing from the influences of Zen meditation and Chinese art philosophy, the process of creating these works involves contemplation and self-reflection. This approach allows each scene to transcend mere representation, transforming into lyrical expressions of the landscapes I have intimately experienced. Transferring the natural world onto canvas through gestural brushwork reflects an awareness of the boundary between the observed world and the depiction. Each painting represents a dialogue between tangible nature and my perception. By blending observation, impression and imagination, these semi-abstract works become subjective, emotional, and spiritual.
